Scaling and Root Planing Therapy

Scaling and root planing therapy is a non-invasive deep-cleaning treatment that is typically performed under local anesthesia to numb the area. Scaling means removing the tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planing gets rid of rough spots on the tooth root where the bacteria gather, and thereby helps remove bacteria that contribute to the disease.

We use ultrasonic scalers and special hand instruments to remove the plaque and tartar build up around the teeth. By doing so, scaling and root planing helps improve the health of the gum tissues.

The most important thing you can do is to brush and floss your teeth every day.

The most common issue that is treatable at home is the build-up of plaque. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria, food and other organic matter that forms on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque make acids that cause cavities. Plaque also leads to periodontal (gum) disease. This can become a serious infection that can damage bone and destroy the tissues around your teeth.

The best defense is to remove plaque before it has a chance to build up and cause problems. Brushing removes plaque from the large surfaces of the teeth and from just under the gums. Brushing alone cannot reach between every nook and cranny. Flossing between your teeth can remove plaque brushing cannot reach. Dr. Angie Lee may also suggest that you use other tools to keep your mouth and teeth clean.
